A full-day or two-day excursion to Ancient Olympia provides an opportunity to experience the cradle of the Olympic spirit. The route from Athens crosses the scenic landscapes of the Peloponnese. In Olympia, you will visit the archaeological site, the museum, and enjoy free time to explore the modern settlement, where you can sample local cuisine and shop for souvenirs.
Ancient Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, in the valley of the Alfeios River, and was the birthplace of the Olympic Games in antiquity. Dedicated to Zeus, Olympia was considered one of the most important religious and athletic centers of ancient Greece. The renowned Olympic Games were held there every four years, drawing athletes and visitors from all the Greek city-states.
Key highlights of the archaeological site include the Temple of Zeus—which housed the chryselephantine statue of the god (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World)—as well as the ancient stadium, the palaestra, and the gymnasium, where athletes trained. The Olympia Museum features rare exhibits, such as the Hermes of Praxiteles.
